Following the success of last spring’s Stockport Town Hall concert with the Northern Chamber Orchestra, charismatic cellist (and vibrant baritone, and accomplished actor at the Young Vic and National Theatre) Matthew Sharp is back. This time, he has a new hat – that of the NCO’s latest Artist in Association – and the performance is his first public performance with the orchestra. Internationally recognised as both a compelling classical artist and a fearless pioneer (think Grace Jones’s Libertango – I’ve Seen That Face Before on cello), Matthew has previously mesmerised audiences taking to the stage alongside Opera North, Manchester Camerata and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This programme features Elgar’s elegiac masterpiece the Cello Concerto, celebrating its centenary this year, plus Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, two of Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances and the Waltz from Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty.
