New Manchester Craft & Design exhibition Metalsmiths showcases the work of seven contemporary makers drawn from Yorkshire Artspace ‘s Starter Studio Programme for Silversmiths & Jewellers in Sheffield. Historically, the northern city was the heart of the cutlery industry – and it’s still at the cutting edge of the silversmithing sector. Exhibiting at MCDC until into the New Year, artists Suzanne Berry, Imogen Clarkstone (whose Sauce Jug is pictured), Elizabeth Handforth, Francisca Onumah, Helena Russell, Charlotte Tollyfield and Aoife White are all linked to the scheme. This show celebrates the excellent craftsmanship and range of techniques and processes they’ve developed, from Clarkstone’s manipulated sheet silver tableware and functional objects with their clean scores and folds, to Russell’s work in silver and base metals that draws influence from the craft of ceramics. Get a sneak preview and pop along to the exhibition launch on Thursday 22 November, free from 6-8pm.
