Dealing with the highly topical subject of integration is a new educational programme coming to Manchester Art Gallery in July. Part of the Manchester International Festival, its aim is for Mancunians to discover and embrace the diversity in their midst. Local people, originally from countries around the world, will give classes on a curriculum that includes languages, culture, ethics, politics, and economics. Every teacher will pass on his or her own experiences for free to anyone interested in developing new skills. School of Integration hopes to foster cohesion, build bridges of cultural understanding, and to cherish the plurality of voices. The project comes from Tania Bruguera, the Cuban installation and performance artist. She lives and works in New York and Havana, and has participated in numerous international exhibitions. Her work is in the permanent collections of MOMA and the Bronx Museum of the Arts.
