A new night arrives on Manchester’s ever-growing spoken word scene this week. With the number of different events, it can be hard to stand out – so it will be interesting to see Minor Words’ unusual approach: instead of being solely spoken word, the night will feature two sets each from a writer and a musician, split across the night. The inaugural event features the poet Tom Kwei and solo musician Richard Lomax. Kwei’s musical sensibility in his writing and performance veers more to the hip-hop side, while Lomax is very much a singer-songwriter, with influences including Bowie, Nick Cave and Jonathan Richman. Nexus Art Café often seems under-represented compared to the other numerous arts spaces around the Northern Quarter – possibly due to a lack of booze – but if ever a venue would be giving out pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, it was going to be here. So, pancakes, words and music, at a brand new live event seems like it could be a winner.
