Exploring everyday life in India, Home in the City is the first solo exhibition from Sooni Taraporevala, who you may know from her work as a screenwriter, for films such as The Namesake and Mississippi Masala. Since 1976, alongside her career in movies, Taraporevala has been photographing the city in which she grew up: then known as Bombay, now called Mumbai. Through a series of black and white images, she presents a personal document of the city’s landscapes, children, elderly, and eccentrics. Her street-style work explores how the metropolis has changed over four decades to become one of the most populous and diverse cities in the world. The exhibition launches the New North and South festival, Manchester University’s three-year-long programme of events that celebrate the shared heritage of Northern England and South Asia.
