Band On The Wall remains one of Manchester’s most cherished venues, and music fans across the city and beyond will be thrilled at the news that the Swan Street venue is to undergo a major expansion. Thanks to £1.4m from the National Lottery, the building will see capacity increased from 340 to 520, with an added 80-capacity venue for live music and film screenings, along with new classroom and rehearsal spaces. For over a century the venue has played host to a hugely eclectic range of international talent, including some of Manchester’s most legendary musical sons, including Joy Division, The Fall, Buzzcocks, along with plenty of others. The exciting new development will also celebrate the Northern Quarter’s rich heritage and diversity with digital displays showing short films, as well as new programmes of events for the surrounding community, rooted in the music and culture of Manchester’s migrant histories, inviting the general public to learn and develop their own skills.
