PAPER, the artist-led gallery near Victoria Station has two exhibitions beginning at the end of this month. ‘Native: Manchester’, a show which has toured extensively, explores the concept of nationhood. Artists from the USA, Japan, and Britain were simply asked, “Where are you from?”, and asked to create work in response. And this exhibition is the culmination of these thoughts, which have added poignancy in the times of rising nationalism. ‘Turning the Page: Manchester – Yokohama’ is a collection of artist books that are the result of a year-long collaboration between the Japanese collective Art Byte Critique and artists in the North West. The books depict the underlying practice of the 17 artists, and are visual expressions of some very personal work. They were created using materials ranging from traditional paper and printer ink, to fabric and found objects.
