As part of the venue’s 60th birthday celebrations, New Century has announced a new scholarship that will pay for one student to attend the dBs Institute of Sound & Digital Technologies.

The successful applicant will have all their tuition fees paid  for the BSc (Hons) Live Sound degree starting September 2024.

Located in the basement of New Century, dBs Institute’s brand new state-of-the-art Manchester campus offers a range of courses in Music Production, Sound Engineering, Sound Design, Game Development and more.

The Live Sound degree is a full-time, three-year course designed to provide in-depth knowledge and practical application of all the skills required to design, build and operate professional sound systems in a range of live event situations.

Alongside practical skills, the course also includes guidance on what it takes to succeed in the industry, including how to set up your own business, working within a team and honing communication skills to maximise chances of employment in the industry.

The scholarship has been announced as part of the New Century’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The hall was first built in 1963 as a state-of-the-art dance hall, before being reborn in 2022 as a three-floor venue which houses a live event venue on the first floor, a ground-floor bar and food hall, and dBs Institute in the basement.

To apply for the scholarship, eligible students will need to submit an application statement which demonstrates their passion for live sound and their future career aspirations in the industry. The statement should be ‘original, engaging and provide a clear and concise insight into their motivation for pursuing a career in live sound.’

The deadline for applying is 30 Apr 2024.
