New Northern comedy explores class, masculinity and suburban ambition at The Edge

This week, The Edge Theatre welcomes the premiere of Lions Vs Elephants, a razor-sharp new comedy examining masculinity, class and the quiet tensions simmering beneath the surface of modern British life.

Written by Graham Dillistone and directed by award-winning theatre-maker Roger Haines, the latest production from Manchester-based Päi Productions brings together a cast of established performers for a fast-paced and emotionally candid portrait of middle England at the turn of the millennium.

Set in Wilmslow in the early 2000s, the play follows two couples gathering for what an ostensibly ordinary dinner party. As the evening unfolds, polite conversation gives way to mounting tensions, exposing class divides, fragile egos and the uneasy realities that fester behind carefully maintained social veneers.

Blending biting humour with discomforting truths, Lions Vs Elephants explores what happens when ambition and identity collide, offering a darkly comic reflection on a society increasingly obsessed with success and social standing.

Under the direction of Haines, whose acclaimed career has spanned productions across the UK, the production combines sharp naturalism with resonant Northern humour, creating a timely and entertaining examination of friendship, aspiration and belonging.
