Manchester has a brand new plant-based restaurant. Black Leaf has officially opened its doors in the basement of Alvarium on Dorsey Street, unveiling a green menu devised by the venue’s award winning chef, Adam Leavy. A MasterChef semi-finalist, Leavy has whipped up a range of plant-orientated dishes including a meat-free scotch egg, served with creamed turnips and toast, white onion and espresso risotto, and roasted banana blossom with courgette peperonata, charred gem lettuce, curried yoghurt and crushed peas. His succinct and sustainable menu also boasts hearty favourites like sausages and mash (minus the meat) with cinnamon roasted apple and onion gravy, and a range of sides – like chunky chips with chive mayo, and salt and pepper tofu garnished with with crispy quinoa and sriracha mayonnaise. Desserts are also available (the Pistachio Crème brûlée with raspberry and thai basil sorbet, almond and shortbread looks like the one for us) – while the green and Earthy Alvarium (Latin for beehive) looks set to be the perfect home for this new green food hotspot.
