Award-winning artist, writer and theatre-maker Rachael Young kicks off her UK mini tour of new show Nightclubbing with two dates at The Lowry. Created through The Lowry’s flagship artist development programme Developed With and inspired by the groundbreaking fifth studio album by Grace Jones, released 37 years ago, there’s plenty of sass in this performance as Rachael avenges, via visceral live music, dance and storytelling, the two young women of colour refused entry to a London club in 2015. Taking her own experiences in relation to the socio-political landscape as a starting point, Rachael’s work explores notions of freedom and fairness – in this case, wondering how attitudes around race, gender and sexuality might change over time. Offering Black Panther-esque Afrofuturist alternative realities and intergalactic visions as Rachael and her self-monikered ‘badass band of super-humans’ roam the universe to a Grace Jones soundtrack, it’s on this stage that the revolution begins.
