Manchester’s annual cycling event, North West Velo Fest kicks off for two weeks at the end of May, offering cycling events for pedalheads of all ages and ability. Now in its seventh year, this community-led festival is organised by volunteers, who work hard to keep all the events free and open to all. Standout rides include the Race Across the City, which will visit secret locations for fun and games, before finishing at The Pilcrow Pub for an afterparty. A feminist history tour visits landmarks linked to notable women who helped put Manchester on the map. The ‘Beer and Deer’ ride will take riders to Dunham Massey Brewery in Cheshire, pedalling at a leisurely pace via roads and canal towpaths. If you can cobble together a picnic (and drinks), then head down to Chorlton Park, for a taster session of Bike Polo on their tennis courts. Whatever you do, just make sure  you get out of the house this Spring and enjoy this cycling festival that’s not just aimed at the hardcore, lycra-clad crowd.
