Barton Arcade, located between St Ann’s Square and Deansgate, is an under-appreciated gem hidden right in the heart of our city. Luckily, there is now one more reason for people to visit, in the form of a new coffee house. Pot Kettle Black, which opened last Friday, is a new venture from St Helens rugby players Mark Flanagan and John Wilkin. It’s not only coffee and tea they have on offer, but also food, including sandwiches, soups and salads. There are also, somewhat inevitably, ‘planks’ with cured meats, cheeses and artisan bread. This part of the city has been somewhat lacking in independent coffee venues recently, so Pot Kettle Black seems well placed to corner the market.

Now open, Unit 14, Barton Arcade, Deansgate, Manchester, M3 2BW, 9am – 5.30pm (Mon-Sat): 10am – 4pm (Sun), www.potkettleblackltd.co.uk
