On Mon 22 Sep, the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra transports audiences on a thrillingly eclectic journey across 850 years of music at The Bridgewater Hall.
Kicking off this year’s eagerly anticipated International Concert Series, the world-renowned ensemble of distinguished musicians begins with the lustrous, reverent spirituality of Vos flores rosarum, by 12th-century composer and polymath, Hildegard of Bingen, a boundlessly gifted medieval nun who became ‘a towering figure in early music history’ (The New Yorker).
To conclude, O/Modernt traces the pulsating rhythms of Philip Glass’ Third Symphony – the two pieces book-ending a whirlwind odyssey through the evolution of composition. Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, a propulsive piece that oscillates between moments of serenity and raw intensity, showcases the Estonian composer’s signature ‘bell-like’ tintinnabuli style, while classical instrumentalist and The National guitarist Bryce Dessner explores the idea of flight and passage in Aheym – Yiddish for ‘homeward’.
Elsewhere, O/Modernt chart a genre-hopping path across the globe, from the Restoration England of Purcell’s What Power Art Thou? to the Grunge-inflected Seattle of Nirvana’s Lithium.
Led by director and violinist Hugo Ticciati alongside esteemed percussionist Evelyn Glennie, the chamber orchestra deliver a programme of singular verve and imagination in a fitting commencement to The Bridgewater Hall’s latest series of thrilling performances by musical luminaries from around the world.
