A poignant new dance production that explores ‘the hidden corners of self and society’ comes to HOME this February.

Obscura is a captivating double-bill by Manchester’s own Company Chameleon. Dancing between light and darkness, the bold show seeks to engage audiences in storytelling surrounding issues that are often simplified or dehumanised in the media and public debate.

Described as both delicate and explosive in equal measure, Obscura’s first act, Umbra, spotlights exclusion and the search for understanding and to be understood.

Next, Refuse follows five performers on a perilous journey in search of refuge. Inspired by Géricault’s iconic painting, The Raft of the Medusa, this visceral work exposes the harsh
realities faced by asylum seekers and displaced people today.

Obscura is about bringing what we hide into the light.” says show Director, Kevin, “The shadows within ourselves, and the lives society would rather not see. Umbra looks inward at the parts of ourselves we deny, while Refuse looks outward at exclusion. Together the two works explore different aspects of the human experience and share stories relevant to the world we’re living in right now.”

Kevin added: ”Reimagining these works for the theatre has been incredibly exciting. The indoor space allows us to work with time, tension and atmosphere in a much more detailed way, and lighting becomes almost like another performer. It’s given the pieces a new depth, while still keeping the raw, physical energy that defines the company’s performance style.

’Beautifully revealing…Unforgettably good.’ Judith Mackrell, The Guardian ★ ★ ★ ★

‘Imaginative and entertainingly choreographed…The athleticism and gymnastic ability on display is exhilarating.’ Carmel Thomason, What’s On Stage
