From Wed 14 – Sat 17 Feb, contemporary circus company Ockham’s Razor bring their stunning adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles to The Lowry with a spellbinding blend of visual theatre, physical skill and innovative storytelling.

Hailed as ‘beautifully human’ by The Times, Tess offers a breathtaking reimagination of the profoundly influential social novel with a wondrous interplay of Hardy’s original prose and the jaw-dropping physical fluidity of circus-infused dance and acrobatics.

Set against a backdrop of shifting projections, the multi-talented ensemble scale moving walls, flit between billowing fabrics and wield wooden planks to inventively capture the sprawling landscapes of an impoverished Wessex, as the tragic and timelessly resonant story of Tess unfolds in a captivating interpretation of Hardy’s seminal, heartbreaking study of power, loss, privilege, poverty, female relationships and sexual desire.

Running in Salford as part of a nationwide tour, Tess reinvents the daring Victorian novel with a ‘physically thrilling’ (The Sunday Times) production which renders Hardy’s bold, defiant heroine through the astounding strength and sheer marvel of the circus body.
