On The Cusp is a new promotion based at Islington Mill, run by Tombed Visions and Cusp Records, focusing on improvisational and creative new music. For its inaugural show, it has secured a special collaboration between Manchester’s very own six-string shredder Chalaque and prolific Fire Music renegades Jooklo Duo (pictured), who are currently touring the UK in this freshly formed trio set-up. Carrying the torch for the revolutionary free jazz movement of the 1960s, the Jooklo Duo have become one of the finest proponents of the sound and have garnered international recognition through their collaborations with musicians as diverse as Bill Nace, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and legendary Jazz musicians such as Don Moye, Sonny Simmons and Sabir Mateen. Made up of Saxophonist Virginia Genta and percussionist David Vanzan, the Jooklos have been creating a whirlwind of ecstatic and mind -melting improv since 2004. Nick Mitchell’s Chalaque promises to be the perfect sparring partner for the Duo’s pulverising sound, whose maximalist approached to blown-out guitar and hyper-fast threat work has been dizzying audiences for years, be it performing in smaller-knit groups or in his trance-inducing out-rock ensemble Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura. Also appearing are Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides, whose ritualistic and subtle approach to improvisation calls to mind the cinematic gravitas of Toru Takemitsu and elements of Noh and Kabuki theatre music in their considered use of Oriental-tinged woodwind and expressive but delicate percussion. Opening the bill is drone sorceress Bridget Hayden, creating shifting tapestries of sound with just guitar and voice.
