The multi-award-winning Opera North returns to Lowry this spring, promising fresh and typically unique riffs on two iconic tales.
On Thu 13 Mar & Fri 14 March, the acclaimed Leeds-based company will take on The Magic Flute. Packed full of fantasy, romance and daring, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time.
The story follows Prince Tamino, on a quest to find love and happiness, alongside his sidekick bird-catcher Papageno, armed with a magic flute. The pair must battle trials, tribulations and an evil sorcerer as they set out to rescue the Queen of the Night’s daughter, Pamina.
Blending Mozart’s unmistakable soundtrack with stunning, shape-shifting stage design, The Magic Flute is a hit for both opera first-timers and seasoned veterans alike. There will also be a shortened 90-minute version of the show performed at 11am on Thu 13 Mar, making it a perfect option for families and schools.
On Sat 15 Mar, Opera North turns to the sea for The Flying Dutchman. While not his first opera, the production is lauded by many as the true beginning of Wagner’s artistic voyage.
At sea, the captain of a ship is cursed along with his crew to wander the ocean until Judgement Day, his soul doomed to purgatory unless true love is found. Back on land, Senta is disillusioned by a world without compassion. Can a meeting between the two lead to salvation, or will it be a catastrophe?
