In our latest pick from The Halle’s incredible winter schedule, Nicola Benedetti will perform the critically-acclaimed concerto Wynton Marsalis, with Cristian Macelaru joining on conducting duties.

Inspired by Benedetti’s life as a traveling performer, the performance incorporates diverse allusions to her Scottish and Marsalis’ African-American heritages.

Taking the form of four picturesque movements, the show includes a soulful Blues segment and closes with a final Hootenanny, which is described by the composer as ‘a raucous stomping and whimsical barn-yard throw-down’.

Also on the programme is Bernstein’s fizzing overture to his comic operetta Candide that encapsulates the wondrous adventures of its ever-optimistic hero, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition, his renowned feat of musical imagination in tribute to a deceased artist and friend, will draw the evening to a close.
