Kraak Gallery is an unsung hero among the saturated live music and club scene of the Northern Quarter. Having been host to some of the most groundbreaking and challenging presentations of contemporary leftfield music to hit Manchester over the last couple of years (The Electronic Exchange and Beautiful Swimmers spring to mind), Kraak is the best place to be yet again this weekend. Partizan & Sam Series are co-curating an evening of celebrated young UK house/techno artists in what promises to be much more of an immersive context than the usual beer-soaked dancefloor environment. Representing Manchester will be the fine production duo of Ghosting Season and Naïve Melody’s Dan English – the man behind the influential and unforgettable series of parties at Charlies bar in the mid 2000s. Also performing, on the back of the recent Modern Driveway release, will be Luke Abbott, one of the UK’s finest current exports who has released, among others, on James Holden’s respected Border Community label. What Kraak Gallery does well is enable artists and promoters to present great music, including dance music (interpret that as you wish) in an environment that nurtures critical thought among the audience and encourages all participants to consider live music and DJ performances as an art form outright, rather than the background to alcoholic and chemical inebriation. But that’s not to say it won’t be fun.
