Sometimes shelling out your hard-earned cash to take a punt on an untried, untested piece of performance can feel a bit tricky disco, especially when you’re still strapped in what is, after all, only the second month of the year. Well, whaddya know, The Lowry has teamed up with Word of Warning (one of the sidelines of northern producers hÅb) to bring you WTF Wednesdays. This Pay What You Decide (PWYD) series of events celebrates cutting-edge contemporary theatre for creatively curious cats who don’t want to lose one of their nine lives. Yep, you get the chance to sample new and exciting works, in a relaxed studio setting, deciding afterwards how much you’d like to contribute based on the quality of what you’ve just experienced. All you need to do is bag a ticket in advance, rock up with time to spare for a drink, then sit back and enjoy. WTF indeed. Check The Lowry website for details of the WTF Wednesdays programme as they are released – the next is The Audit by Proto-type Theater. Originally set up in NYC and now based in the UK via a spin in our very own NQ, Proto-type are well placed to stop off in Reykjavik and bring back this account of how the Icelandic people stood up and spoke out when the economic crash well and truly landed on their shores. The company’s second theatrical work examining contemporary politics (the first being the critically acclaimed A Machine They’re Secretly Building), The Audit (Or Iceland, A Modern Myth) tells the story of how a nation raised their voices in protest, and how collective power can work wonders. Hope can be lost – but it can also be refound. For more Pay As You Decide events at the Lowry, click here.
