On Fri 13 Mar, the Philharmonia Orchestra returns to The Bridgewater Hall with a sumptuous programme spanning myth, modernity and the marvels of Mexico, led by conductor Marin Alsop and featuring the world-renowned cellist and Grammy-winning composer, Alisa Weilerstein.

The evening opens in the rugged climes of Central America with Arturo Márquez’s exhilarating Danzón No.2, whose rhythmic swagger and vibrant lyricism have established the work as a contemporary classic, before the Manchester premiere of Gabriela Ortiz’s first cello concerto, Dzonot, unfolds as a vivid, sensuous meditation on place and elemental force, inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula and written especially for Weilerstein.

To conclude, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade carries audiences across the Atlantic into a land of shimmering orchestral colour, as the composer’s opulent retelling of One Thousand and One Nights blends romance, peril and fantastical adventure with intoxicating drama on a dazzling scale.
