Old public information films have always been a curio, filled with stiff-upper-lipped gentlemen giving advice, warnings and musings on just about anything. They also inspired some of the greatest Reeves and Mortimer sketches. Now, through the brains of London-based J. Willgoose, Esq (pictured) and Wrigglesworth, they have been used as the inspiration and backdrop for one of the best albums of 2013. Public Service Broadcasting released debut record Inform – Educate – Entertain on 6 May and will play Sound Control the following Tuesday (14 May). Armed with a guitar, a banjo, a computer and a theremin, Willgoose, together with Wrigglesworth on drums, piano and electronics, have created a new, exciting sound using voiceovers from yesteryear. That’s some feat. Listen to last March’s single Spitfire here then go buy some tickets. With plenty of airplay on 6music, this is sure to sell out.
Tue 14 May, Sound Control, 1 New Wakefield Street, M1 5NP, Tel: 0161 236 0340, 7pm, £10, www.soundcontrolmanchester.co.uk
