University of Salford celebrates LGBT History Month on Friday with an unusual and inspiring one-day festival of award-winning LGBTQ short films. Tying in with the opening of the Sochi Winter Olympics, Queer Media Festival will be premiering international films from the likes of Russia and USA ahead of Canal Street’s alternative ‘Opening of the Games’ celebrations the same evening. Featuring over 20 LGBTQ-themed films, talks and Q&A sessions, the festival will be opened by local poet Dominic Berry and Salford comedian Lee Peart, before viral video director Mike Buonaiuto and singer Rikette take over to host the second half. Highlights include short film screenings from Manchester community theatre VADA, the premiere of lesbian coming-of-age drama KIT, with a talk from director Bruno Collins and writer Craig Daniel Adams, and a discussion with LGBT journalists including Daily Mirror’s Robert Midgely and Inter-Media’s Jo Welch. Festival entry is free but booking required.
