Given its unlikely setting of the middle of Piccadilly Gardens, Shoryu has become a welcome addition to the city since its opening in late 2016. The tiny, popular spot is the noodle restaurant’s first opening outside of the capital, bringing southern Japanese Hakata cuisine and soupy-noodle tonkotsu ramen to the Mancunian masses. Already offering deals such as Bun Mondays and Matcha Sundays, Shoryu Manchester has now added a Christmas Set Menu, available through to early January. The three-course, £20 menu features a choice of soy-marinated chick karaage or grilled halloumi & shimeji mushrooms buns to start, followed by either its signature 12-hours-in-the-making ganso tonkotsu ramen (with barbecue pork belly, plus added shallots) or its ‘white natural’ vegetarian version, incorporating soy milk, miso, konbu & shiitake broth, plus fried tofu, kikurage mushrooms, spring onions, bamboo shoots and seaweed. Optional chilli oil and shichimi togarashi are on hand to turn the heat up. For dessert, choose between matcha cheesecake or sakura & azuki chiffon cake with cherry coulis. A special ginza snowflake cocktail (£5) pits red berry puree against sparkling sake, while a bottle of Terra Serena prosecco (£20) means you can push the boat out with this Christmas special. Just don’t forget to bring your own party hats.
