On Tue 19 and Wed 20 Nov, the groundbreaking interactive theatrical experience Rewrites brings a bold, enthralling showcase of new and developing musicals to The Lowry with a wildly creative format and dynamic deconstructions of conventional storytelling.

Billed as a mix of works-in-progress, concert performances and ‘curtain raiser’ preview vignettes, Rewrites offers an innovative and immersive platform for new musicals at the embryonic stage of their production, inviting audiences to engage with their raw components before they ultimately debut as a fully-fledged show.

In this edition, Taiyo Yoshida and Dominic Varney’s blistering pop-rock comedy caper Chosen follows sexagenarian IT worker Sue, who wakes from a coma to find the world decimated by a zombie plague and half the population reanimated as ravenous monsters. When she accidentally kills the ‘Chosen One’, a courageous and prophesied figure in the mould of Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker et al, Sue is forced to take up the mantle of heroism herself, assuming their identity and embarking on a quest to single-handedly save humanity.

Promising a captivatingly unique live experience for seasoned dramaturgs and theatre newbies alike, the latest unmissable Rewrites production follows previous showcases of musicals like No Miracles Here by The Letter Room, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Sad) by Jon Brittain and Matthew Floyd Jones (Kathy & Stella) , A Mother’s Song by Finn Anderson and the West End smash-hit, Operation Mincemeat.

Each performance also includes a special fifteen-minute preview of a brand new musical. In Stephen Hyde and Ella Langley’s Dead Famous (Tue 19 Nov), jobbing songwriter Evie trades secrecy for superstardom when she agrees to conceal her pop idol’s crime scene, setting her on a path of increasing corruption in a bid to keep her newfound fame. The following evening, Jack Pepper’s Duet brings an absorbing classical music-themed production which recounts the true love story of his piano teacher and pianist wife, reimagined as a thank you note to his mentor.
