There’s nothing new about what Wooden Shjips do – see The Stooges, Suicide, Spaceman 3 before them – but they do it so well they should soon be a permanent member of that list of forebears. The San Francisco quartet deliver a heavy garage-psychedelia that can move between frenetic and languid but is always fixed on motorik rhythms, droning organ and taut, fuzzy guitar riffs. Last year the band released their third – and most accessible – album, of noticeably shorter songs but with no deviation from the dark, churning groove. It’s not about the destination with Wooden Shjips, it’s all about the ride.
