Bureau gallery hosts Compression, the first solo exhibition by Burnley-born and Manchester-based artist Robin Megannity. Drawing on art historical references as well as traditional and academic techniques, Megannity’s theatrical and ambiguous oil paintings invite the viewer to create their own narrative within the staged and suspended scenes the artist constructs. In doing so the work explores the complexes of painting as a medium for producing meaning as well referencing contemporary theory and modern anxieties. The title of the exhibition, Compression, draws links to the compression of digital data. The reference relates to Megannity’s exploration of the artistic technique of layering paint – both the painting process of the pieces as well as the ambiguity surrounding the construction of the staged scenes and their translation from photograph into oil on canvas.
