Romance & strings: Northern Chamber Orchestra to host two special Valentine’s shows

Northern Chamber Orchestra is here to help you take the romance up a notch this Valentine’s weekend.

Searching for something a little different from your Valentine’s plans this year? Look no further than two stunning string quartet concerts by the Northern Chamber Orchestra, brought to you by some of the North’s most distinguished chamber musicians. 

West Didsbury’s picturesque Christ Church and Chester’s Storyhouse will play host to the NCO’s principal string players on Sat 12 Feb (West Didsbury) and Sun 13 Feb (Chester), led by artistic director Nicholas Ward (violin).  

Expect performances that feature works by legends of the classical music world including Beethoven, Haydn and Dvořák.

Northern Chamber Orchestra was formed in the late 1960s and has made a name for itself as one of the country’s most renowned chamber outfits. 

As the oldest professional chamber orchestra in the North West, NCO regularly welcomes top-flight soloists to its concerts and is in high demand across the UK. 

The afternoon performance at the Storyhouse will mark the orchestra’s first appearance in Chester and is sure to be a matinee to remember.

Both concerts will take audiences on a musical journey through some of the genre’s most masterful works. 

Experience much-loved compositions including the uplifting melodies of Dvořák’s American; composed during a summer holiday in Iowa in 1893, Beethoven’s haunting final quartet; written a few months before his death, and Haydn’s Bird; a sweeping and joyful work ending with a finale based on a Slavonic dance tune. 

The NCO will be returning to both venues for two spring concerts in May 2022, featuring works by Rossini, Beethoven, and Mozart.
