ScreeningFilm.com is a new, free online tool for film lovers in the North West to discover alternative and independent film screenings outside of the multiplex’s standard offerings. And there’s no better way to celebrate its launch than with a good old fashioned knees-up hosted by Manchester’s premier canteen-slash-bar-slash-live-music-venue, Soup Kitchen. On the decks will be So Flute DJs, lending some fantastic film-inspired sounds to the occasion, while a special screening of short film Do You Want Sunday Cinema and Games? will add further cinematic flavour. Produced in 1941, and kindly contributed by the North West Film Archive for the evening, this five-minute short is a fascinating piece of local history – made up of wartime documentary footage shot in Stockport and Manchester’s bustling town centres. As Manchester’s independent film scene continues to thrive, a platform like ScreeningFilm.com should become a particularly useful tool for audiences and promoters alike. Now that’s something that’s worth celebrating.
