Society of Island Universities is a collaborative exhibition exploring the limits of abstraction, material, and space. Produced by Lisa Denyer and Michael Thorp, the show will bring together the work of five artists: Holly Rowan Hesson, Jo McGonigal, Lisa Denyer, Sarah McNulty and Willow Rowlands. The title of the exhibition is taken from Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception, in which the ways of seeing and our creative discoveries are brought into question, asking whether we can ever properly articulate our understanding of the world through materials. Working from this premise, the artists, and the curators alike, use the space as a mediator between the pieces and their surroundings, working from a variety of mediums including photography, installation, sculpture, projection, and painting. Through visual elements of colour, textures, and surfaces, the making process becomes a way of enquiring into the transient nature of art, and the space it inhabits.
