Spoken word meets emcee culture as spoken word night Ode brings two great writers to Chorlton. The free open mic night blends literature performance with live music and MCs, and comes from the creative brains behind Speakeasy and Contact’s poetry collective Young Identity. Headlining their June event is Desiree Reynolds, who will read from Seduce, her Peepal Tree Press novel about mourners in the Caribbean. She will also read extracts from her unpublished collection of short stories. Co-headlining on the night is Roma Havers, member of Young Identity and a finalist in the 2017 UniSlam. Host and DJ Chris Jam will soundtrack the night with Zero Days, his electro project that mixes soul with broken beats and acidic bleeps. Music will also come from UK hip hop crew Nabb Gang and the resident band Ode:Eep, whose members featured in a jazz group on the TV series Peaky Blinders. This is the second special Ode that sees them branch out from their Northern Quarter Odd base to the sister bar Oddest in Chorlton. To bring your own words to the suburbs, and for a chance to take on Ode’s fearsome live clap-o-meter, there may still be time to grab a reserve slot on the open mic. Email info@ode.org.uk.
