The route of one of Britain’s most iconic and important protests forms the basis for a new live show from Staurt Maconie. Jarrow, Road To The Deep South retraces the route of the Jarrow March – where 200 men walked from Jarrow to London carrying a petition to protest unemployment and working conditions. The Crusade came about from a divided and increasingly unequal country and eight decades later Britain faces its own challenges in a post-Brexit, austerity climate. Maconie says his aim is to ‘know what the country looks like now from the road, tracks, streets and riverbanks they walked, and to see the pews, pubs, cafes and halls they visited; a picture of now overlaid with a filter or gauze of 1936’. Based on his new book ‘Long Road From Jarrow’, the show is a new look at the North and Britain in 2018 and will be mainly taking places at venues along the Jarrow route.
