An exhibition at Bramley Baths is taking photography to a new dimension, inviting the viewer underwater to browse a series of images by a Leeds-based photographer. Lizzie Coombes has taken a look at the grand Edwardian building through a watery lense, capturing a 2011 performance at the baths by the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra who, appropriately enough, played Handel’s Water Music on a stage in the middle of the pool. Submerged – part of I Love West Leeds Arts Festival – will also celebrate the past, present and future uses of this historic building with free cake and tea, behind-the-scenes tours of the pump house and fitness lessons in the gym. Victorian and Edwardian swimming pools are a dying breed, threatened by council cuts, and local communities across the country are fighting to keep them open. The best thing about attending Submerged is that, as well as taking a swim, you’ll be supporting the pool’s new owners, Friends of Bramley Baths, in their bid to keep the Baths functioning so its splendour can be enjoyed for another hundred years.
