At the grand old age of four, The Alchemist is one of Spinningfields’ mainstays – and it recently underwent a major transformation, resulting in a doubling in size. Having taken over the adjoining spot previously occupied by All Saints, the additional space has enabled The Alchemist to create a more airy atmosphere – with a dedicated 116-cover dining area the most obvious addition. Its substantial menu is broken down by Weekend Breakfasts, Sunday Roasts and its main a la carte options. Corn Dogs (£5.50) and Beer-Battered Prawn Lollipops (£5.75) stand out among starters, while main plates include Satay Salmon (pictured, £12.95), Jerk Chicken (£10.50) and Special Fried Chicken In A Basket (£10.50) – plus several Japanese ramen and fajita options. The Alchemist also offers gourmet sandwiches and burgers, plus a choice of seven salads, and sides including Salt & Pepper Fries (£3.50) and Bok Choi (£3.50). Home to the popular Smokey Old Fashioned, The Alchemist has stepped up its cocktail menu too, with several additions including The Indigo Sunset, which changes colour as you drink it.
