On Sat 14 Jun, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra round off their Bridgewater Hall concert season with a spellbinding rendition of Mahler’s timeless tribute to the living world.
An exuberant, sun-dappled paean to nature in all its forms, Mahler’s gargantuan Symphony No. 3 renders the elements with such piercing depth and all-consuming scope that the composer became convinced that the piece had a life of its own.
Imbued with ‘all the energy of an offshore wind farm’, the work bridges the divide between Earth and soul in a roiling masterpiece that oscillates between boundless euphoria and profound anguish, arriving at its climax in an earth-shattering celebration of love.
Featuring the formidable Jess Dandy as soloist alongside the Hallé Choir, CBSO Children’s Chorus, CBSO Youth Chorus and full forces of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds, this is music on an epic scale – a fitting finale to an incredible season of music at Bridgewater Hall.
