On Sat 28 October, Chief Conductor John Storgårds leads the BBC Philharmonic in a soaring evening of beloved Finnish orchestral music, from Sibelius to Rautavaara, across three transcendent arrangements at The Bridgewater Hall.
The evening begins with dark urgency in the murky, ominous hinterlands of Northern Europe with Sibelius’s brooding tone poem, Pohjola’s Daughter.
Brimming with deeply rich orchestration and mesmeric melody, the piece follows the legendary hero Väinämöinen in his attempts to win the trust of the fabled daughter of the North.
Then, rising from the mundane realm to the celestial, Gubaidulina’s transcendent, radical concerto In Tempus Praesens showcases world-renowned violinist Tobias Feldmann, who masterfully replicates the ascent from Hell to ultimate salvation, culminating in the heady bliss of Rautavaara’s Seventh Symphony, Angel of Light – an ‘auroral tapestry’ of childhood memories hailed for its profound spirituality.
