Led by Chief Conductor John Storgårds, the BBC Philharmonic launches its 2023-24 season at The Bridgewater Hall with a fierce, cinematic rendition of Janáček’s towering Sinfonietta followed by Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony on Sat 30 Sep.
Grand yet spiritually enigmatic, Sinfonietta dazzles with fevered brass and ‘bold yet bridled’ melodies, leaping from swashbuckling military fanfare to mournful sensuality and back again across twenty-five minutes of soaring passion.
Following Sinfonietta’s conclusion, Dame Sarah Connolly explores some of the lesser-known territory of orchestral history with a collection of Alma Mahler’s compositions, before the BBC Philharmonic provide a flawless counterweight to Janáček with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s magisterial swan song.
