On Sat 22 Jun, the BBC Philharmonic concludes its triumphant season of orchestral wonder at The Bridgewater Hall with Ending on a High, a majestic concert packed with bombastic, dazzling arrangements from three iconic composers, led by Olivier Award-winning conductor Mark Wigglesworth.

Perhaps the greatest musical showman of the 19th century, Richard Wagner splits open the BBC Philharmonic’s soaring season finale with Wesendonck-Lieder, an ethereal collection of five arrangements for female voice which presents a golden opportunity to experience the composer’s sweeping, transcendent and uniquely fantastical sound in miniature. Messiaen sends a sparkling celestial jolt through the pageantry with Un sourire – ‘a smile’ – a gently uplifting string arrangement originally written for the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s death, before the epic tempest of Berlioz’s Fantastic Symphony transports audiences through the dreams, passions and tormented realms of opiated heartbreak.
