The inaugural Blog North Awards took place last night at the Deaf Institute. Part of Manchester Literature Festival, the annual event follows on from the previous Manchester Blog Awards – but widens the scope to celebrate the best of Northern England’s independent online publishing. The evening featured readings from four of the blogs shortlisted in the awards’ seven categories, plus a reading and Q&A session with the headliner, author and blogger Adam Christopher. The event culminated with the announcement of the award winners – here are a few of our favourites…

Best City or Neighbourhood Blog: Sevenstreets – a stylish, comprehensive alternative guide to Liverpool, with a habit of provoking a legal writ or two

Best Food and Drink Blog: Around the World in Eighty Bakes – one woman’s attempt to discover and document the world through baked goods. She’s half way through her tasty-looking challenge so far

Best Writing: The Most Difficult Thing Ever – the musings and observations of a Huddersfield postman, whose reading had the awards audience in hysterics
