Based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer prize-winning novel and adapted for the stage by Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winner Marsha Norman, Allee Willis, Brenda Russell and Stephen Bray, The Color Purple brings its stirring story of strength, love and redemption to The Lowry for a five-day run beginning on Tue 11 Oct.
Set to a rich, vivid score by Grammy Award-winners Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, which draws on jazz, ragtime, gospel and blues, The Color Purple follows the uplifting, inspirational life of Celie. Abused, oppressed and disregarded throughout her youth, Celie embarks on ‘a journey through joy, despair, anguish and hope’, ultimately finding her own voice, identity and capacity for self-love thanks to the profound connections with the women around her, from sister Nettie to opulent singer Shug.
