With an astonishing catalogue of over 200 original songs, award-winning composer and alumna Sally Beamish returns to the Royal Northern College of Music on Thu 20 Oct for a set of shows celebrating her multifarious career as part of the school’s In Focus festival for 2022.

Drawing inspiration from a range of sources, specifically jazz and Scottish traditional, Beamish’s daunting oeuvre comprises solo, duo, chamber, orchestral and ballet compositions. Taking place across a single day, Beamish begins her retrospective with an RNCM Thursday Lunchtimes performance which includes Between Earth and Sea for flute, viola and harp, Quartet No 2: Opus California and Composition student Sophie Nolan’s new work for guitar duo alongside’s Beamish’s Epilogue for string quintet.

That evening, Beamish joins the RNCM for an in-depth conversation accompanying incredible performances of her works for solo strings by RNCM students, including African drumbeat-inspired Awuya, guitar melody Unquiet and a fresh interpretation of Scottish folk – with a showcase of future composers – by student Christopher Cook.

At 8pm, Sally Beamish rounds off proceedings with her Nordic-inspired Cage of Doves and her work for chamber orchestra, Reckless, alongside brand new works by RNCM composers.
