Brought to life for the very first time at the RNCM, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden transports audiences across an enchanting landscape of seasonal magic and wintry mystique in a soaring yet intricate adaptation of the beloved folk tale. If you’re new to opera, the RNCM invites you to try something different this season with an unforgettable live musical experience. Whether you’re a new listener or seasoned enthusiast, opera is a creative retelling of human emotions that we can all relate to.

Rendered in captivating English verse by decorated opera translator Christopher Cowell, Rimsky-Korsakov’s classic winter’s story follows the mythical Snow Maiden, who longs to escape the frigid grip of her parents – Father Frost and Mother Spring – and live among mortals in a remote village. Defiantly, she embarks on a formative journey through euphoria, pain, first love and eventual marriage, as her passage into the mortal realm unleashes a tempest of emotions with seismic consequences for all involved.

Featuring gentle moments of intimacy, heady romantic melodies and electrifying choruses, the RNCM students’ performance masterfully captures Rimsky-Korsakov’s singular ability to evoke the full scope of humanity with a beautifully composed festive operatic work which flawlessly interweaves the transcendent loftiness of eternal, opposing natural forces with the stirring resonance of earthly hope and familial relationships.

Tickets are available for The Snow Maiden on Sun 10 Dec (3pm), Tue 12 Dec (7pm), Wed 13 Dec (7pm) and Sat 16 Dec (3pm). Book yours here.
