This Easter, the Science and Industry Museum celebrates magnificent machines with three weeks of marvellous mechanics, curious contraptions and interactive experiences for the whole family to enjoy. The fun-filled activities run from Sat 23 Mar – Sun 14 April alongside their regular programme of unmissable displays and immersive exhibitions.

Over the holidays an assortment of activities will be popping up including a giant upcycled marble run created by Wild Rumpus. This incredible invention invites visitors to apply their creative spark to the forces of gravity and friction to build their own circuits and mechanisms.

Elsewhere, the museum hosts a series of kid-friendly missions to ‘mend a special machine’ with help from the expert Explainers in searching for the pieces required to fix the curious contraption. A new Reading Corner offers inspiration for budding scientists with fascinating books about mighty machines and the people who created them.

Visitors can also embark on a delightfully disgusting odyssey through the human digestive system with Operation Ouch! Food, Poo and You, an endlessly engaging exhibition based on the hit BBC Children’s TV show, before discovering the magic of gaming with over fifty years of playable consoles and countless classic titles in Power Up, offering the unmissable opportunity for children and grown-ups alike to enjoy everything from Pac Man and Sonic to latest-gen Virtual Reality systems.

The Science and Industry Museum is also home to the Power Hall, one of the nation’s best-loved industrial heritage galleries which houses one of the UK’s biggest collections of working steam engines. While the gallery is currently closed for extensive restoration, the space is set to reopen next spring with a bold and brilliant reimagined gallery where visitors can explore engineering innovations through working machines and the stories of the people who developed and worked with them.

Dani Bryers, Schools and Families Producer said:

From the museum’s historic textiles machinery to modern day computer games and even home-made contraptions, machines are everywhere! This spring holidays we’re inviting everyone to come and discover how marvellous machines really are, and that we can all have a go at making them.

“Work as a team to plot a route on the biggest marble run you’ve ever seen, created by Wild Rumpus and engineered by you, or go on a hunt around the museum to help our Explainers fix their curious contraption. There’s so much going on and we can’t wait to welcome along inventors of the future for three weeks of family fun.
