This month, Contact on Oxford Road presents The Spalding Suite, a new physical theatre show that celebrates UK basketball culture. The play delves into the heart of the game by looking at the players’ hopes and dreams, their friendships and their camaraderie. It features contemporary movement mixed with beatboxing, hip-hop and poetry. UK beatbox champion MC Zani performs a live soundscape to the show, and the poetry will come from Nick Makoha, Nii Ayikwei Parkes and Jacob Sam-La Rose. The new play was written and conceived by Innua Ellami, a spoken-word artist and playwright. His produced works include Candy Coated Unicorns and Converse All Stars. This work was co-commissioned by Contact and the Southbank Centre, and produced by Fuel, an organisation that specialises in developing new theatrical talent.
