Taking place across Thu 3 and Fri 4 Apr, Seth Kriebel’s captivating new storytelling game The Unbuilt Room transforms The Portico into an absorbing, immersive adventure experience in which visitors control their destiny while charting imaginary worlds packed with endless possibilities.

Billed as part-performance, part-game, The Unbuilt Room invites guests into an extra-dimensional ‘verbal maze’ where the wondrous simplicity of storytelling combines with the limitless potential of contemporary gaming.

Led by a lone performer in command of a bare stage, the specially written new exploration game instructs participants to navigate an imagined, ethereal realm with instructions like ‘Go North’ or ‘Pick up the lamp, drawing inspiration from early text-adventure computer games and choose-your-own-story books to create an enchanting unseen journey where places create memories, and memories create places.

Every show is different, with each narrative shaped by individual choices as visitors collaborate to overcome obstacles and uncover a captivating labyrinth without leaving their seats. Dare you go up to the attic? What’s behind the hidden room in the basement?

These performances are unique to the Portico and use the spaces & people in the story, forming part of the library’s experimental programme for reuniting the building.

Critical response to Kriebel’s Exploration Games:

‘★★★★★ Turns the concept of immersive theatre on its head.’
– Londonist on A House Repeated

‘A gently fascinating interactive world… it’s funny, too.’ – Time Out on A House Repeated

‘★★★★ Delivers both laughter and poetry.’ – The Stage, on Beowulf
