Band on the Wall’s film club returns next week, and the chosen movie promises to be a belter: The Upsetter – The Life and Music of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. As a record producer, Perry is the eccentric genius behind much of Jamaica’s best music. Working out of his backyard studio The Black Ark, he made records for Bob Marley and Max Romeo. With his unique production sound, he was a pioneer of dub, and made some of the genre’s finest albums. This documentary uses archive concert and interview footage to tell Scratch’s story, with some help from narrator Benicio del Toro. Before the screening, authentic Caribbean cuisine will be served, including curried goat and jerk chicken. All this is likely to get you amped up for March, when the great man himself comes to BotW for two nights.

Tue 13 Jan, Band on the Wall, 25 Swan Street, Northern Quarter, M4 5JZ, 5pm (bar and food), 7.30pm (screening), £8, www.bandonthewall.org
