There’s now a bard among the bars at Manchester’s glitzy Great Northern as Manchester gets its first new repertory theatre since the 1950s. Northern Rep’s hip take on traditional theatre can be found where B.Eat Street’s Junkyard Golf Club used to be. It’s also the first time the former railway goods warehouse has hosted a theatre. Company director Thomas Moore ran Shakespeare productions in Chorlton Park last summer, and the Rep’s first of three immersive productions is a nightclubby reimagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They’ll also host a Shakespeare Showdown – think poetry slam with ruffs. With its own bar and eatery alongside its two performance spaces, expect the Rep to become a new, trendy base for writers and thespians – a touch of the Edinburgh Fringe vibe here in Manchester. A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs until mid April, and expect a full opening of the space from July.
Until Sat 15 Apr, Northern Rep, The Great Northern, 235 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4EN, 7.30pm, from £10, www.northernrep.co.uk
