Happy Days is one of Samuel Beckett’s surrealist masterpieces. Maxine Peake stars as Winnie, an eternally optimistic protagonist armed with nothing but the lipstick, the mirror and the bag. Happy Days stands alongside Waiting For Godot and Endgame. It is one of Beckett’s finest attempts to blend surrealism, comedy and despair on the stage. The production builds on the success of Peake’s creative partnership with director Sarah Frankcom. The pair have previously collaborated on the Royal Exchange’s Hamlet and A Streetcar Named Desire. Happy Days runs over four weeks from May – June 2018. The play comes as Maxine Peake’s own play, Queens of the Coal Age, gears up for its debut later in June.
