Marking 40 years since the release of Joy Division’s debut album, the acclaimed play New Dawn Fades is returning in a special ‘anniversary cut’. It’s coming to the Dancehouse Theatre in mid-September for three nights and a matinee only. The play tells the story of the band, not only in the context of the punk revolution but also in Manchester’s wider history. Tony Wilson guides the audience through the story, and introduces an array of historical and iconic figures, including Roman General Julius Agricola, Fredrich Engels, The Sex Pistols, and Buzzcocks. Drawing inspiration from Ian Curtis’s enigmatic lyrics, it is a story of passion and grief, and features live performances of Joy Division classics. Written by Brian Gorman, New Dawn Fades debuted at the Greater Manchester Fringe in 2013 and has toured regularly across the country since then. Early bird tickets are on sale now.
